The current society has knowledge as one of its most important values and indeed this is often called Knowledge Society. But Knowledge Society is still a desired aim more than a reality.

Technology must serve to the achievement of Knowledge Society through knowledge- based information systems, but this is not an easy and out-dated task, nevertheless critically important topics, from different multicultural and interdisciplinary perspectives, address the complex relationships among technology, knowledge and society.

World Summit on the Knowledge Society (WSKS) is an international event that promotes the dialogue for the main aspects of the Knowledge Society towards a better world for all. WSKS brings together key stakeholders of the Knowledge Society development worldwide, from Academia, Industry, Government, Policy Makers, and active citizens to look at the impact and prospects of the Information Technology, and the knowledge-based era it is creating, on key facets of living, working, learning, innovating and collaborating in today’s hyper-complex world.

In the open debate about the WSKS themes, Software Engineering and Knowledge Engineering have an important role just looking for the improvement of the above mention knowledge-based systems.

These goals match up with International Journal of Software Engineering and Knowledge Engineering aim and scope, devoting to issues raised by this vision.

Thus, the 4th World Summit on the Knowledge Society (WSKS 2011) makes a special call for researching, state-of-the-art and case study papers that address topics area of Software Engineering and Knowledge Engineering for the Knowledge Society, including but not limited to the following topics:

Rationale

The World Summit on the Knowledge Society (WSKS) is an international event that promotes the dialogue for the main aspects of the Knowledge Society towards a better world for all. In the open debate about the WSKS themes, there are many applications of computational intelligence to the knowledge society.

Computational intelligence techniques are known for their ability to adapt and to exhibit fault tolerance, high computational speed and resilience against noisy information. Computational Intelligence includes several topics like web intelligence, machine learning, agents and multiagent systems or knowledge mining to cite just a few. This panoply of techniques is beginning to be prominent in commercial information systems. These applications are a key part of the knowledge society, gathering and processing big amounts of data in order to convert it to knowledge, the key asset for the corporations of the 21st century.

Thus, the aim of this Special Issue is to bring an overview of applications as well as methods to enable computational intelligence methods to build information systems supporting the development of the knowledge society.

The topics of this special issue include but are not limited to:

  • Knowledge Representation and Reasoning
  • Knowledge Acquisition using computational intelligence techniques
  • Neural networks and genetic algorithms applications in the development of information systems
  • Semantic Web
  • Semantic Social Network Analysis
  • Machine learning applications
  • Natural Language Processing
  • Intelligent Multi-agent Systems
  • Applications and Case-studies

Submission

Papers will be selected by editors from those papers published in WSKS2011 proceedings. All papers must be extended in, at a very minimum, 50% new material. The authors should write a brief note to accompany their submission that explains the manner in which the extended version of the paper does, indeed, constitute an extension of the original version, pointing out, for example, areas where new text or additional results have been included, where text has been re-written and where extra depth is provided.

All papers will be reviewed in accordance with the journal policy. Papers must conform to the formatting guidelines as provided by Atlantis Press (http://www.atlantis-press.com/publications/ijcis/index.html ) and sent to guest editors’ emails in MsWord format. For queries about this special issue, feel free to contact the special issue guest editors. Please note the following important dates:

aLearning Teaching Innovations in Engineering Higher Education

The Guest Editors for this Special Issue invite papers addressing the theme of eLearning innovative practices and experiences in Engineering Higher Education for Wiley Computer Applications in Engineering Education Journal.

Rationale

eLearning practices are usually introduced in Engineering Higher Education studies with different configurations, i.e., completely online programmes, blended solutions or simply technological tools that are used in traditional presential programmes.

Technology applied to Engineering Higher Education introduces many methodological possibilities, especially in active learning practices or tutorial guiding; provides a high flexibility degree regarding time and geographical barriers; allows that student can introduce themselves in informal and competence based learning processes; and also opens the devices and media spectrum with mobile and social media, evolving the eLearning concept to aLearning (where a means mobile, game, television, social, collaborative, ubiquitous, etc. learning).

Moreover, independently of the technological advances, all these tools or gadget means nothing if they are not really used efficiently in Higher Education teaching/learning processes, with a clear learning goal.

Thus, technology in Engineering Higher Education is not an aim; it is a very important and significant medium by the way the main educational stakeholders may improve the teaching/learning processes in which they are involved through a very high innovation degree.

This special issue is devoted to share innovative aLearning practices in Engineering Higher Education. This includes, in the scope of Engineering Higher Education, a wide spectrum of topics that include, but are not limited to:

-          Virtual communities in practice;

-          Educative Web 2.0 practices;

-          Language learning/practicing;

-          Informal learning discovering in higher education;

-          eTutoring practices;

-          Multicultural enhancement through ICT;

-          Active learning methods supported by ICT.
